Are doomed to repeat it.

Can a man like Adolph Hitler rule a civilized nation today? It is possible, isn’t it? If you are interested in books about how Hitler came to power, I have two excellent ones by Sebastian Haffner to recommend:

Defying Hitler The author grew up in Germany during World War I (as a boy) and Hitler’s coming to power as a young man. He discusses the constant change of government and hyperinflation of the 1920’s and how a fringe group like Hitler’s party actually came to power despite the fact that he was way out of the mainstream. The book ends before the author flees to England, but not before he can bemoan the fate of many of his friends who disagreed with Hitler or were Jewish. You’ll see some disturbing parallels with the present time, but this book is an outstanding read.

The Meaning of Hitler Ever wonder how the German people could have let a man like Adolph Hitler come to power? I know I have. How could they let such evil acts go by with hardly a whimper? This book helped me to understand what went through the German citizens’ minds during the 1930’s as Hitler became a national hero and gradually reduced the German society to one ruled by fear. Written by an educated German, this book will give you amazing insight so that we can all remain forever vigilant against the rise of evil in our world.

Both these books are suitable for high school students as well as advanced middle school students, and of course, adults.
